Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) is a treatment where you breathe high concentrations of oxygen inside a pressurised chamber, allowing your body to absorb significantly more oxygen than it would under normal conditions. This increase in pressure enables oxygen to dissolve directly into the plasma, reaching areas of the body where circulation may be limited or compromised.
Unlike standard oxygen intake through breathing, HBOT delivers oxygen at a much deeper level, supporting tissues, cells and organs that require enhanced oxygenation. This process can help the body function more efficiently and support natural healing, recovery and overall wellbeing.
“The goal is to increase oxygen delivery to tissues where circulation is reduced or healing is needed.” (hopkinsmedicine.org)
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy
Under normal conditions, oxygen is carried through the body primarily by red blood cells. However, during hyperbaric oxygen therapy, the increased atmospheric pressure allows oxygen to dissolve directly into all body fluids, including plasma, lymph and cerebrospinal fluid.
This means oxygen can reach areas that may otherwise be difficult to supply, such as injured tissue or areas with reduced blood flow. The increased oxygen levels create an optimal environment for healing, helping to support cellular repair, reduce swelling, and improve circulation.
HBOT typically operates at pressures above normal atmospheric levels, enhancing oxygen absorption and distribution throughout the body. This physiological response is what makes HBOT such a powerful supportive therapy.
How HBOT Works (The Science)
Oxygen & Healing at a Cellular Level
Oxygen plays a vital role in nearly every biological process within the body. At a cellular level, increased oxygen availability supports energy production (ATP), which is essential for cell repair and regeneration.
Research suggests that HBOT may stimulate key healing mechanisms, including:
The formation of new blood vessels (angiogenesis)
Increased collagen production for tissue repair
Activation of stem cells involved in regeneration
These processes are fundamental for healing injuries, improving skin and tissue health, and supporting recovery after physical or neurological stress.
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy has been widely studied across various medical and wellness applications. Research has demonstrated its ability to support wound healing, improve circulation, and enhance physical performance.
Studies have shown:
Enhanced recovery and endurance in physically active individuals
Improved healing rates in damaged or oxygen-deprived tissues
Positive effects on inflammation and overall cellular function
For example, research published in Frontiers in Medicine highlighted improvements in endurance and physical performance following HBOT, while other studies have demonstrated increased blood vessel formation and tissue regeneration.
“HBOT exhibited significant improvements in endurance and physical performance.” (Frontiers in Medicine)
Evidence & Clinical Research
Anti-Inflammatory & Recovery Effects
Inflammation is a natural response by the body, but when it becomes chronic, it can slow healing and contribute to a wide range of health issues. HBOT has been shown to help regulate inflammatory responses by improving oxygen delivery and reducing oxidative stress.
By increasing oxygen availability, HBOT may help:
Reduce swelling in injured tissues
Support faster recovery after physical strain
Improve circulation and lymphatic drainage
This makes it particularly beneficial for individuals recovering from injuries, intense exercise, or conditions associated with ongoing inflammation.
The brain is highly dependent on oxygen, and even small reductions in oxygen supply can impact cognitive function. HBOT works by increasing oxygen delivery to brain tissue, which may support neurological function and recovery.
Emerging research suggests HBOT may:
Support cognitive clarity and focus
Promote neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to adapt and repair)
Improve blood flow to specific areas of the brain
This is why HBOT is being explored for individuals recovering from neurological events, as well as those looking to optimise brain performance and mental wellbeing.
Brain Health & Neurological Support
There are two main types of hyperbaric oxygen therapy: medical HBOT and mild hyperbaric oxygen therapy (mHBOT).
Medical HBOT is typically delivered in hospital settings at higher pressures and is used for specific medical conditions under strict clinical supervision.
Mild Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (mHBOT), which we offer at Wellness Journey Centre, uses lower pressure levels in specially designed chambers. This provides a gentler, more accessible experience while still supporting increased oxygen delivery.
mHBOT is commonly used for:
Recovery and wellness
Supporting energy levels
Reducing fatigue and inflammation
Our focus is to provide a safe, relaxing and supportive environment using mild chambers that are suitable for regular sessions.
mHBOT vs HBOT (Understanding the Difference)
What HBOT May Support
HBOT is used by a wide range of individuals looking to support their health, recovery and performance.
It may help support:
Recovery after physical strain or injury
Fatigue and low energy levels
Inflammation and circulation
Brain function and mental clarity
General wellbeing and recovery
It is important to note that responses can vary between individuals, and consistent sessions are often recommended for optimal results.
Safety & Professional Guidance
Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is generally considered safe when used appropriately. The mild chambers used at Wellness Journey Centre are designed to provide a controlled and comfortable experience.
As with any wellness therapy, it is important to ensure HBOT is suitable for you. We always recommend discussing any existing medical conditions or concerns before starting sessions.
What to Expect During a Session
Your HBOT session is designed to be calm, comfortable and restorative. After arriving at the clinic, you will be guided into the chamber where you can sit or lie down depending on your preference.
As the chamber gently pressurises, you may feel a slight sensation in your ears similar to changes in altitude. Once inside, you simply relax and breathe normally while the oxygen works throughout your body.
Sessions typically last around 30/60/90 minutes, and many clients use this time to rest, listen to music, or simply unwind.
